Diva In The Caribbean -Embracing Culture
Welcome to Elle's Happy Mid-Week Happy Hour! The Diva of the Carribean...
How is the week so far? It is holy week, and some are camping out, and others like me, will just be chilling and enjoying the beauty of the Island. Well this past week-end, this Diva had a wonderful time. Concert at Fort Fredrik, in Frederiksted., with Dion Parson and the 21st Century Band. St. Croix's Big Band, and local musicians, and singing. Then on Saturday, was the Moko Jumbie exhibit, at the Steeple Museum in Christiansted. Great exhibit, great work by all local artists. Exhibit a must see. And then Sunday was, ZUMBA , fantastic . Had a blast, and I feel good. Had to rub down with my friend Bengay, but hey, I had a good workout. Of course all my Diva friends were there, and my ZUMBA instructors, Evelyn, Sonsirez, Diane. The Diva's Rock!
Moving back to St. Croix, after being away for many, many years, can prove to be very challenging in some ways, but good in others. I recently met someone who said to me, you should be glad to be back on St. Croix, this is your culture, you were raised here. I thought about what she said, and I feel that yes culture is an important part of who I am, but I do not have to have culture to define who I am. I never denied my "culture". Born to two Virgin Islanders, my brother and I were born in New York, and moved to St. Croix in the sixties, when my parents relocated here. We are an extension of the Virgin Island Culture, because our parents loved us, and were proud of their native birth place. Working at State Department I met
people from all over the globe. Today, my best friend who I call my Sister, is from Lao. We always talk about the similarities of our culture, what we miss and what we do not miss. My childhood best friend, who we speak often, we grew up here in St. Croix, together, is from the State of Texas, and she too has embraced the "culture" of the Virgin Islands, but she also embraces her other roots.
I am proud to be me, whether I grew up in the Virgin Islands culture, or the New York Culture, I know in my heart I deserve the freedom to be who I want to be, and embrace any culture I want. As a whole we need to embrace our ancestors who fought slavery we need to embrace the people who helped pave the way for us to vote, own our land, embrace gender equality. We need to embrace free to be you and me. We have to learn first of all to respect each others culture, each others way of life. We do not have to like everything, but we need to learn to respect it. As human beings we need to respect someone's choice to their religious beliefs, who they want to marry whether it be man marry man, or women marry women, or man and women marry.
It is their choice to do what they want to do. You take care of you, and that is your choice, to be proud of you. The Diva has voiced her opinion, now its time for a Cruzan drink......Rum and coke please, twist of lemon....and make it Cruzan Rum....
